Discovered in 1884 near Barberton, South Africa, by Scotsman Robert Jameson, the Gerbera is the 5th most popular flower, and the most popular daisy variety. Simple yet sophisticated, the vibrant colored Gerberas are the birth flowers for the star sign Leo (July). There are more than 200 species of gerbera and breeders are developing many other variants. Being almost unknown 20 years ago this plant is extendedly popular and in vogue. Some even associate it with the star sign Leo. The flower was first brought to Europe in the 19th century.
